Place Value in Kindergarten!
All year, we have been working with Counting Collections to help the kids develop strong number sense and 1:1 correspondence. Counting Collections also teaches them how to show their thinking ~ a precursor to the higher math concept of justifying their answer ~ using words, pictures and numbers. We started the year with numbers 1 - 5, extended our work to numbers to 10, and then 20. We use our "days in school" counting each morning to help develop our sense of place value. When we get 10 sticks in the ones cup, it is a bundle day and we notice how the number of sticks or bundles in each cup represents the digits in our number.
Recently, we have been working to understand numbers to 100, extending our thinking about place value from 2 to 3 digit numbers. On Thursday, the 99th day of school, I gave the kids a Counting Collections challenge! Up until that day, I had provided students with a counting collection and then asked them to tell me (and then show me on paper) "how many?". They have done this independently and with a partner I assigned to them. On Tuesday, I changed things up a bit. I told them that they would be counting their 100s collections on Wednesday, so to practice I wanted them to show me a collection of 99 that we had in our classroom. They chose a partner and then set off to find a set of 99. It was exciting to watch as pairs confidently found objects to count (colored pencils, kava planks, magna tiles, legos, marbles, counters, and even magnetic words).
On Wednesday, students brought in their own counting collections of 100!
I was so busy enjoying this process that I did not take many photos. However the students created videos on SeeSaw that show that their collection are 100. If your student has not posted their video yet, they will soon. We are still learning how to produce effective videos, and it often takes more than one draft to produce a final video. Not all students were able to make the revisions necessary to publish on Friday, but will have a chance to do this in a station on Monday. I have posted a few videos below for you to enjoy, and will post more when they are published. If you have subscribed to SeeSaw, you will receive notification when your child publishes. Please make sure to comment on their hard work! If you are like me and sometimes find writing comments about your kid's work tricky, try using these stems ~ "I notice...", "I appreciate ..." and "Thank you for ..." . |
